In this series, FashionUnited brings you a ‘Day in the Life’ feature talking to insiders from every different walk of the fashion industry. Here they reveal how they got started, work on a day to day basis, and why they wouldn’t swap
their fashion choice for anything. Today we are featuring Babette Wasserman, founder and creative director behind her self titled jewellery line, which marks a specific achievable luxury price point and is sold across the globe including Selfridges and Bloomingdales. How
I studied at Central St Martins School of Art for a BA Hons in Jewellery Design so I come from a technical jewellery-making background. I have always loved jewellery, I have been making piece of jewellery since I was a child, creating pieces for my friends at school. I decided to go on to make it my career.
Early Morning consists of... reading through all my emails, responding to customers, sending the technical drawings to my workshops and designing or altering new and existing pieces.
Late Morning consists of... speaking to my production team, coordinating and coming up with ideas for our social media
And in the afternoon... having meetings with different members of my team, setting sales targets with my sales team and studying the sales reports, overlooking the accounts and contacting potential new customers, I deal directly with Japan and France myself... and if there is time, have a cup of tea!
Daily Objective? Managing to get through and responding promptly to all the enquiries and emails I receive. Always being available for my staff for any queries that may crop up, having fun while I work and feeling like I am achieving something good each day.
Why do you design jewellery at this price bracket/range as your niche? The way I describe my jewellery is ' A perfect expression of everyday luxury'. I think jewellery should be well made, at a price that is attainable and most of all make you feel million dollars when you wear it! (prices range from £80-300)
Why and what would you recommend about jewellery design to a fashion graduate?
I think jewellery design in the niche market that I am in has a wonderful balance between fashion and jewellery. It is ever changing in look and style which makes it constantly stimulating. It is a joy to be handling precious materials and personally, I love putting together and creating the different angles of a 3 dimensional piece and working out the technical aspect of its construction.
