Intu to redevelop Broadmarsh shopping centre

Shopping centre operator Intu has signed a conditional development agreement with Nottingham City Council to pave the way for a 190 million pound redevelopment of its two shopping centres in the city over the next few years. Intu, which also operates Trafford Centre, Manchester

Arndale and Lakeside, said that the signing of agreement was an important step in transforming the shopping experience in Nottingham. It plans to spend 150 million pounds redeveloping the Intu Broadmarsh shopping centre, the car park and surrounding public realm improvements.

As well as

redeveloping Broadmarsh, Intu is also investing 40 million pounds in remodelling and refurbishing Intu Victoria Centre, which is already underway, ahead of a wider development and extension of the shopping centre.

Mike Butterworth, Intu chief operating officer, said: “Intu now has in place investment plans that will extend and upgrade the city's two favourite shopping destinations, introduce new brands, restaurants and leisure spaces and create new and improved gateways to the city in the north and south.

“Work is already underway on the first of these projects with the 40 million pounds remodelling and refurbishment of Intu Victoria Centre and I am really pleased that we can start to take the Intu Broadmarsh plan forward as well.”

Intu signs development agreement for Broadmarsh in Nottingham

The agreement, which has been years in the making is subject to commercial and legal conditions, however it is hoped that construction work to extend and refurbish Intu Broadmarsh could start before the end of 2015. Ahead of carrying out formal public consultations over the summer and submitting a planning application in the autumn of this year, Intu has been working with local architects Benoy on potential designs for the renovated shopping centre.

Butterworth added: “We are pleased with the progress of these designs and we want to make sure that we now also consider what the people of Nottingham would like to see as part of the redevelopment.

“So, before we undertake the formal public consultation later this year, we’re going to create a space at Intu Broadmarsh where everybody can let us know their thoughts and ideas so we can develop these designs further.”

Leader of Nottingham City Council, Councillor Jon Collins commented: “The redevelopment of Intu Broadmarsh and surrounding areas will significantly enhance the southern side of the city, linking with the station and tram developments and wider plans for the Southern Gateway.

“In due course, we are looking to carry out improvements to Milton Street, Parliament Street and Clumber Street around Intu Victoria Centre, which will boost the northern side of the city and help complete the transformation of the city centre’s retail core.”
