The rumours of a new John Lewis shop opening at Westfield London have been confirmed, the department store chain has announced that it will open a four-level store in the planned Westfield extension. The store will

mark John Lewis’ fourth in London and its first in West London and will span 230,000 square foot making it one of the biggest in the UK and is expected to cost around 30 million pounds to build.

John
Lewis will anchor the new 1 billion pound Westfield London extension, which will feature 600,000 square foot of additional retail and 1,500 homes, and the shop is expected to create around 600 new jobs.

Expected to open in 2017, the store will stock more than 350,000 product lines including fashion, home and technology, as well as feature an outdoor dining terrace with views over the listed Dimco buildings and BBC television centre.

Michael Gutman, Westfield's European managing director said: “John Lewis is the most requested store at Westfield London and we are delighted that we will soon be able to deliver on this for our customers.

“The new store will be another huge attraction to Westfield London and will become an important centrepiece of the massive regeneration taking place in the White City opportunity area with the creation of thousands of new homes and jobs.”

Andy Street, John Lewis managing director, added: “Our business in London has strengthened significantly over recent years. It is therefore right that we now move to open in Westfield London and bring our offer to customers in the west of the city.”

The new John Lewis department store will see the chain in competition with Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and House of Fraser who already have stores at the Westfield London centre.

The extension has been welcomed by the Hammersmith & Fulham Council, who has stated that the development will bring even more people into the area, as well as make a “lasting contribution to its ongoing regeneration” of White City.

Nicholas Botterill, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham council, commented: “The arrival of John Lewis is further proof that White City is becoming unmatched as a centre for shopping and leisure.”

Currently, John Lewis has London stores at Oxford Street, in Brent Cross shopping centre, and at Westfield Stratford City, as well as 27 other department stores across the country and 10 John Lewis at Home outlets.
