John Lewis announced record sales of £121m last week (to Sat Dec 11th) the most it has ever taken in a week and the first time it has surpassed £120m.This is 8% up on the retailer's biggest week in 2009 (£112m), which until last week had been its

all-time record. The figure is also 10% up on the same week last year and 16.7% up on last week’s trade.

Record
weeks were seen across a number of branches as shoppers flooded the streets following the previous week’s snow. Johnlewis.com recorded its biggest ever day on 6 December, with sales just ahead of the previous Monday and a third ‘mega’ Monday expected tomorrow. For the week as a whole online sales were 45% up on last year.

David Barford, Director Selling Operations for John Lewis, said: “We are thrilled to have exceeded our record week from last year, and by such a margin. The thaw in the weather has no doubt helped, and shoppers have been out in force throughout the week. Even in areas were snow has persisted we have seen the determination of our customers to deliver a perfect Christmas for their friends and family, whether that is selecting presents or decorating the home. The atmosphere in our branches is very festive as Partners pull out all the stops to deliver the levels of service our customers rightly expect from us."
