According to new research from trend analysts, Global Language Monitor, London has overtaken New York as fashion capital of the world. The Texas-based company analyses words, phrases and concepts in relation to the frequency with which

they are mentioned on the blogosphere, the 75,000 print and electronic media, as well as new social media sources.

G
eneral consensus is that the growing international interest in the style of the new Duchess of Cambridge, speculation surrounding her Alexander Mcqueen wedding dress, and the tragic suicide of the genius designer himself, have been the catalyst for this new rise to the top spot.

Bekka Payack, the Manhattan-based fashion correspondent of the Global Language Monitor, said: “We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars, Princess Kate and Alexander McQueen can have upon a global ranking. Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York.”

This comes on the back of the news, this week, of the growing footfall last month in the central London shopping regions, Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street, and strong international interest in the luxury sector.

London followed by New York, Paris and Milan took the top four spots, whilst Hong Kong slipped from second place to sixth.

This year’s list has expanded in order to acknowledge the growing contribution to fashion of other regional cities. Rome and Berlin both jumped a number of places and European cities dominated five of the top ten spots, confirming Europe as a firm leader in the fashion world.
