In a new mini series in the lead up to the host of internationally recognised trade fairs happening across the UK over the next couple of months, FashionUnited is looking at some of the emerging designers exhibiting at these events

for the first time. Founders and creative directors from across the continent are giving us insight into their labels and why they decided on a specific trade fair. Here we talk to Sence Copenhagen founder and creative director, Gitte Holmskof, about the direction of this niche, mid market jewellery label, which began in 2008, but chose Moda as their first UK market entree.

Who is Sence Copenhagen – what’s the design direction, how did the label come about?
Sence Copenhagen was found by four friends, who after spending more than 10 year in corporate life wanted to do something different. We felt that the incumbent jewellery brands were missing out on certain fashion trends and that there was a need for a brand that offered Scandinavian designs combined with semi-precious stones in the colours of the season at affordable prices. Sence Copenhagen was founded in 2008 and almost immediately experienced success in the few chosen markets(see below) that were focused on.

What fair are you at and why did you choose Moda?
Sence Copenhagen exhibits on fairs in Germany, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Austria, France and we are extremely optimistic and excited to be exhibiting at the major shows in the UK. We launched Sence Copenhagen in the UK in February 2012 and received a very positive feedback from key retailers in the South of England and around London. Customers expressed a wish that we would go to the major shows in the country and we would now like to look for retailers in the whole of the UK who are interested in starting a partnership with us.We chose Moda because of the focus on the international brands, a strong accessory area and because Moda is one of the most important meeting places for serious buyers and strong brands.

What makes Sence Copenhagen niche and to know about in the market?
First of all our collection and the whole Sencefeel and experience. The Danish / Swedish design team have created a great new collection - Jewellery with semi-precious stones set in matte gold and matte silver plating and combined with leather in the colours of the season will surely set the trend for the coming season. The designers have been inspired by the Scandinavian nature and autumn weather, so cold water, rain, wind and light are key words. The collection is designed so that it can be mixed and match across the different lines so that women can combine the jewellery endlessly sending them off on their personal adventure, telling their story and sharing their personality with the world. This is what Sence Copenhagen is all about.

Who is your target customer?
All women want to look beautiful and with Sence jewellery all women can look beautiful. The typical woman who buys Sence jewellery is a self-confident female, who wants to dress for the occasion be it looking smart at work, dressing up for a party or simply looking casual chic on a free afternoon with her friends.

What do you expect of your first participation at Moda?
We are looking forward to showing the great new collection (first time in the UK) to British retailers. As many women as possible should come by the stand to touch, feel and try on the Sence jewellery, see how the jewellery can be mixed and matched across different lines to make an unique expression and to discuss and have fun with us.

What is going to be your bestseller this coming season?
Surely it will be a matte bracelet or necklace with semi-precious stones in the colours of the season, but when one visits our stand at Moda, you can see our best sellers, touch the jewellery, make your own mix and match and look yourself in the mirror – you will then see that Sence Copenhagen is completely different to any other brand on the market.

What do you hope target/sales wise to achieve from exhibiting at Moda?
We hope to meet as many people as possible, have great discussion on how we all can benefit from a partnership and how we can help women look more beautiful with SENCE jewellery.

In our new digital days, why do you think trade fairs have stayed strong presence wise?
It is always important to meet and to discuss. Only by getting to know other people will we develop and understand what our customers really want.
