It is during the semi-annual fashion weeks held in New York, London, Milan and Paris that the upcoming fashion trends are determined. Now the question is, what will consumers be putting on their wish lists for the fall to come? FashionUnited lists the 5 biggest fashion trends to emerge during New York Fashion Week.

#1 - Oversized coats From big, to bigger, and biggest! This season, fashion houses such as MaxMara, Céline and Stella McCartney showcase oversized winter coats and in New York, the oversized coat was present at nearly every catwalk show. This autumn the elegant coat dress will make a comeback and was spotted in a number of collections, including those from Jason Wu, Derek Lam and Helmut Lang. Alexander Wang sported broad military coats with big pockets, while Proenza Schouler showed ankle length jackets with wide tweed shoulder pads.

#2 - Wide trousers Although skinny jeans continue to be a fashion staple among the street scene, on the catwalk there was hardly a slim pant leg in sight. Céline's Phoebe Philo en Stella McCartney have showed trousers with a wider leg for a number of seasons and now a number of American designers seem to be following in suit. Opening Ceremony, Edun, Karen Walker, Theory all opted for a more comfortable, wide pant leg. Marc by Marc Jacobs even made an attempt to bring back the sock-over-pants trend, which resulted in an eighties, MC-Hammer effect.

#3 - The Turtleneck The turtleneck has made its comeback this season and has been spotted all over the New York street scene, which appears to sit well with a number of designers. For fall 2014-2015 the turtleneck sweater has been re-invented in a number of ways: a crop top with a turtleneck (Proenza Schouler), oversized and chunky (The Row), a long dress with a turtleneck (Helmut Lang) and a little turtleneck to finish the look under a buttoned up blouse (Marc by Marc Jacobs).

#4 - The Suit Derek Lam, 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Altazurra, Helmut Lang, Theory, The Row, Zac Posen, all featured one or more versions of the woman's suit in their collections. Karen Walker and The Row showcased masculine women's suits complete with pinstripes, while Derek Lam presented an emerald green ensemble featuring a leather rectangular jacket and ankle length pencil skirt. Another trend that came back with vengeance: the business suit. Jason Wu showed the elegant set in wine and gray tones and Proenza Schouler presented a contemplating variation in cobalt blue, featuring a short wrap skirt and jacket with narrow waist and broad shoulders.

#5 - The Flared Skirt The time when fashion dictated the length of a ladies skirt is long gone. Today mini, midi and maxi skirts all hang simultaneously in clothing racks around the world. However this fall will see the attention grabbing flared skirt, falling just below the knee as seen at Derek Lam and the ankle-length pencil skirt as seen at Proenza Schouler receiving the most attention.
