The annual forecast for the coming year’s leading colour is based on what Pantone thinks shoppers want and need. This is influenced by fashion shows that took place in September for spring/summer 2012, news events, fabric shows, pop culture and consumer habits.
Eiseman explained: “Part of what we do is look at the zeitgeist. We have to look at everything in the world around us. It's not an arbitrary choice.”
She said the reason for orange is because of its association with urgency and calling to action. It is a contrast to last year's hot-pink shade, Honeysuckle, which was supposed to channel cheerfulness and nostalgia.
Seen on catwalks all over the fashion capitals, high street chains such as Zara and H&M are already catching on with accessories and pieces in the shade already creeping into stores.
