UK retailers are making good innings according to yesterday’s Sunday Times Rich List. The annual report published by the newspaper compiling Britain’s wealthiest across all sectors placed Primark owner, George Weston, at number nine with

a £6billion fortune.

Sir
Philip Green and Lady Green, Arcadia group owners, came in at 13th with a £95million growth to £4.2 billion.

Other notable retailers featured including Harrods Mohammed Al-Fayed and Matalan owner, John Hargreaves, at joint 46th with 1.3billion, JD sports boss, Mike Ashley, at 52nd and River Island owner, Bernard Lewis at 56th.

A couple of members of the retail aristocracy also featured in the top 100, with Sir Ken Morrison (64th) and Lord Sainsbury’s (75th) having minority stakes in the respective supermarkets that bear their family names to thank for their high placings.

One of the most notable risers in the list was John Whittaker, the property owner who sold the Trafford Centre in Manchester to Capital Shopping Centres in January and is now worth £2.08 billion.
