Graphic designer-cum-fashion designer Lia Griffith of Papier Couture has found a unique way to recycle old copies of Vogue by turning them into couture gowns. Griffith who describes paper as her favourite medium to work in has created over 20 paper dress as part of her wearable art project.
“Paper was my favourite objects of entertainment when I was a child. Paper dolls, cardboard cars, I even made myself a pair of sandals by cutting and wrapping paper around my little five-year-old feet,” says Griffith. “Though my fairy tale dream was to become an apparel designer, it was a smooth and easy fit to find my career in graphic design. It is no surprise that mixing my two favourite forms of design, graphic/paper and apparel is my natural evolution.”
Griffith’s designs have been used in runway shows, events and exhibitions, and she has received commissions from brands including Xerox who asked her to create a couture gown out of recycled Xerox prints.
As well as Papier Couture, Griffith is the Creative Director for Ellinée Design House, which specialises in wedding invitations, baby announcements, party invitations and greeting cards.
