Asos delivers turnaround as FY26 pre-tax profit reaches 24.4 million pounds
UK online fashion retailer Asos has returned to statutory annual profit for the 52 weeks to August 30, 2026, delivering a reported pre-tax profit of 24.4 million pounds compared with a loss of 281.6 million pounds in the prior financial year.
The London-based pureplay retailer recorded statutory operating profit of 93.5 million pounds, reversing an operating loss of 212.3 million pounds in 2025. On an adjusted basis, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 29 percent year-over-year (YoY) to 170.3 million pounds.
Adjusted group revenue fell 9 percent YoY on a like-for-like (LFL) basis to 2.24 billion pounds, while gross merchandise value (GMV) contracted 5 percent LFL to 2.35 billion pounds. The revenue decline reflected the strategic shift towards flexible fulfilment partner models, which account for 21 percent of partner brand GMV and operate on a commission structure.
Margin progression and operational turnaround
Despite the top-line contraction across the full year, Asos achieved an inflection in trading momentum towards the close of the financial period. Fourth-quarter GMV returned to positive territory, rising 4 percent YoY and representing the first quarterly expansion for the retailer since 2022.
Adjusted gross margin expanded by 340 basis points to 50.5 percent, surpassing the medium-term targets established by the executive leadership. Improved buying, reduced markdown reliance, disciplined inventory clearance and higher full-price sell-through rates across both autumn/winter 2025 (AW25) and spring/summer 2026 (SS26) underpinned the margin progression.
Womenswear served as the primary category driver, with sales expanding 8% in the second half of the fiscal year. Menswear remained in recovery phase, prompting management to appoint a dedicated product director for the Asos Design menswear line to execute a parallel restructuring playbook.
Regional performance and balance sheet reshaping
Geographic performance showed stabilization across primary territories, led by the UK and continental Europe:
-
The UK recorded flat active customer database metrics alongside a 12 percent increase in new customer acquisition, while H2 GMV rose 2% YoY;
-
Europe posted a 6 percent full-year GMV decline, though German trading improved to finish broadly flat after returning to growth in the second half;
-
The US saw fourth-quarter GMV expand 2 percent following a commercial reset toward occasionwear and local market relevance;
-
Rest of World markets experienced a 14 percent decline in GMV, though quarterly drops moderated to 2 percent by the final period.
During the period, Asos concluded the disposal of mothballed fulfilment centres in Lichfield and Atlanta, generating net proceeds of 115.5 million pounds and a combined pre-tax gain of 164.5 million pounds. The transactions eliminated onerous lease commitments, contributing to an overall reduction in total net borrowing.
Artificial intelligence strategy and financial guidance
Asos outlined plans to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) across merchandising, design and customer-facing interfaces. The group will introduce an initiative termed ‘The Stylist’, using machine learning models to transition online apparel discovery from transactional search into automated styling edits and personalised recommendations.
The retailer confirmed that an information security incident identified on October 6, 2026, resulted in unauthorised access to basic customer files, though payment credentials and passwords remained uncompromised. Precautionary marketing pauses caused short-term UK sales disruption equivalent to approximately 2 percent to 4 percent of group GMV, but trading across the initial eight weeks of the 2027 financial year remained broadly flat.
For the 2027 fiscal year, the board projects low-single-digit GMV growth, adjusted EBITDA between 180 million pounds and 200 million pounds, capital expenditure at 4 percent of revenue, and positive free cash flow generation.
