Esprit is the latest retailer to halt the use of mohair in its collections, following an expose from PETA concerning animal abuse at goat farms in South Africa. Esprit said in a statement that all its clothes will be mohair free by mid-2019. “As long as the treatment of mohair goats cannot be humane and in line with our animal welfare policy, we will continue to keep the ban in place”, stated the company.

Earlier this month, Hennes & Mauritz AB, Inditex, Arcardia Group and Gap Inc pledged to ban the fibre after an investigation undercover numerous cases of animal cruelty. Following the fashion companies’ mohair ban, Mohair South Africa, the organisation that represents the industry, refuted PETA's report, arguing that it is "factually incorrect.". Currently, 50 percent of the world’s mohair comes from South Africa.
