Fortnum & Mason has announced that impressive sales growth across every channel, fuelled by a significant rise in domestic custom at its flagship store, has led the company to a record trading performance over the Christmas period. In the five-week period ending December 31, Fortnum's like-for-like sales were up 13 percent.
Commenting on the Christmas trading, Ewan Venters, CEO of Fortnum & Mason, said in a media release: "Of course we are pleased by the continuing growth across all channels but we take great pride in the fact that at a time when the high street is under pressure, our stores, restaurants, bars and quality products are being enjoyed by our domestic customers more than ever.”
This sales growth, the company added builds on last year's record sales figure, and was underpinned by strong performances at the stores in Piccadilly, St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 5 as well as positive online growth. In the month of December, 77 percent of all sales in Piccadilly were from domestic customers underpinned by online sales, which were up 23 percent on the same period last year.
“In a climate of financial uncertainty, these are very encouraging results. Our excellent Christmas performance is a reflection of the focus we have on our customers and is testament to the enduring appeal of great products and service," added Venters.
