Fashion retailer Topshop joins the likes of brands like H&M, Acne Studios,

New Look and Esprit by announcing its decision to halt the sourcing of products containing angora.

On their Facebook page Topshop posted the following: “Having listened to the concerns of customers, and further to an in-depth discussion with Peta regarding the use of angora, we have instructed our suppliers to halt the sourcing of product containing angora fibre while we investigate alternatives.”

A company spokeswoman added that Topshop will go on selling its current stock of angora products in store, which include knitted sweaters, socks and scarves. However, many fans of the fashion retailer have commented on the post that although it is good initiative from the company, it is not enough and ask Topshop to stop selling all angora products and pull its existing stock from its shelves.

Last month Animal rights group Peta unveiled shocking industry videos of Chinese workers ripping chucks of fur off from live angora rabbits, while the animals screamed in pain. China currently produces 90 percent of the world's angora hair and fibre.

Peta has urged industry insiders and consumers around the world to boycott angora products and a number of retailers have responded to the campaign by halting the sourcing and production of angora products until they can confirm that angora suppliers conform and follow animal welfare standards.
