The CO₂ Improve initiative, launched by the IAF (International Apparel Federation) last year, aims to improve the worldwide fashion and lifestyle industry when it comes to CO₂ emissions through fashion logistics. The fashion supply chain covers the entire world, so the logistical operations in the fashion industry almost by definition add up to a very high level of pollution. With increasing attention from consumers, governments and NGOs, individual companies are willing, but also struggling, to do better. With future CO₂ taxes looming on the horizon, it is even more important for any company to know where it stands and how to do better.

CO₂ footprint certification & carbon pricing

A standardization of CO₂ monitoring has become very important to create a level playing field for the global fashion industry and to end the chaos created by the ever-growing number of national and generic monitoring systems, with many different and often dubious outcomes. An official certification of each company's CO₂ footprint will follow in the coming years, even going so far that accountants will need to sign. In the future a CO₂ tax will be introduced and Germany has already started it since 2021.

CO₂ Improve offers high-quality CO₂ monitoring, which meets future standards. Calculations are based on the well-known GLEC Framework, the international standard for emission calculation developed by the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC). The results of the CO₂ Improve analysis can be used for official reports and purposes.

The essence of creating greener logistics is cooperation.

The IAF is mobilizing its industry association members in 60 countries (including DM&T, Sportsbranchen.dk, UKFT, TEKO Logistik, Modint, Creamoda and AFC) and fashion brands are already signing up, with the first encouraging results showing. The IAF is working closely together with both fashion-logistics and data analyses experts under the direction of long-time partner Greenway Logistics.

The IAF offers its member associations a suite of services to help their member companies measure and then reduce their CO₂ level in logistics. This is done through individual actions and particularly through collective industry projects.

CO2 Improve. Don't compensate. Innovate.
