London - Shoppers in the US and the UK are looking for clothes that are ‘military chic’, ‘free spirited’ and ‘ready-to-go’ outfits according to Google’s Fashion Trends 2016 report.
Top of the pack is the bomber jacket on both sides of the pond, with searches for military style jackets in April growing 297 percent year-on-year in the UK and by 612 percent year-on-year in the US, as the ‘military chic’ trend grew.
The report notes that the bomber jacket trend has been aided in popularity by celebrity associations, with David Beckham linked to the trend in the UK in March 2015, while model Gigi Hadid had the highest association with bomber jacket searches in the UK at the beginning of 2016. In the US, the bomber jackets links with Kanye, Kim Kardashian and her sister Kylie Jenner that has boosted the coat.
Bomberjacks, off-shoulder and jumpsuits most popular trends
Another key fashion trend of the year is the ‘off-the-shoulder’ look, with ‘free spirited’ off-the-shoulder tops and dresses, along with other flower-child styles like boho dresses and kimonos trending highly. In the UK, off-the-shoulder looks have grown 261 percent, while in the US, it has increased by 347 percent from December 2015 to May 2016.
According to Google it’s the fact the look is “comfortable, stylish, and adaptable” that has made it a go-to for consumers across the board. Helped of course by the look being spotted on celebrities from Michelle Obama to Kendall Jenner.
When it comes to ‘ready-to-go’ outfits the top trending item is the jumpsuit. Google states that British consumers led the jumpsuit trend in 2013, while Americans embraced it two years later in a much bigger way, partly due to the styles versatility and practical nature, as well as the fact it has been seen on Taylor Swift and Kate Hudson.
As well as key ‘seasonal’ trends, the report also noted that ripped jeans and biker pants are ‘sustained risers’, meaning that they are “safe bets”, with consumers investing in them all year round.
The Fashion Trends report also adds that all good things must come to an end and that drop-crotch trousers, see-through clothes, acid-wash jeans and babydoll dresses, have all been categorised as ‘sustained decliners’ after showing a steady decline in the past years.
