Alexon disappointing first half

British clothing and footwear retailer Alexon has produced disappointing first half results, partly attributed to a tough consumer climate on the high street. Alexon, owner of chains such as Bay Trading and Dolcis, reported pre-tax profits in the first six months ended 30 July of £7.89 million. Sales dropped 1 percent on a like-for-like basis. Turnover remained the same at £198 million.
The group said that men's wear and Dolcis especially had been affected. It also lost business due to the termination of department store chain Allders. Although 2005 is proving to be a challenging year, we believe that our diversified portfolio of brands will stand us in good stead in the difficult retail environment," said chief executive John Osborne.
