Bhs to launch in India

Sir Philip Green is set to launch his Bhs department store chain in India. Bhs aims to open stores in both Delhi and Mumbai by the end of the year. The chain is following on the heels of Debenhams, Argos and Mothercare, who already have stores, or plan to open them, in the subcontinent.

Bhs is entering India through a franchise agreement with LK Pagarani, a Dubai-based Indian businessman, after holding talks with a number of potential partners. Pagarani's Al Maya Group has run Bhs's successful Dubai franchise operation for more than 20 years. The retail sector's size is set to grow 20-fold from £7bn today to £140bn over the coming decade, Technopak, the retail consultant, suggests.
