Vivienne Westwood has made a move into music and will release her first compilation CD during London Fashion Week through Mercury. The album called Catwalk Breakdown is conceptualized, compiled and art-directed by the Dame of British fashion herself. The album will be launched at the concept store of Selfridges Wonder Room in London on September 17th.

The compilation features a selection of Westwood’s favourite music that has accompanied her shows over the years. From The New York Dolls to Tchaikovsky, the collection is a musical reflection of the classic cuts that have gone to make Vivienne Westwood the icon she is today.

On the album Westwood commented: “My clothes always tell a story. It may refer to the past, but it’s always projected into this heroic future. And I choose the music accordingly. Sometimes the music can just be sexy, it can let you relax, look at the clothes, put people into a fantastic mood. Then it might just have to swing back and lift you up to the final triumph of the fashion show. These are some of the pieces that I’ve relied on over all these years – my classics. They’ve never failed me.”

During the celebration of the launch, archive pieces will be exhibited alongside current designs and one-off show pieces. Against a backdrop of Vivienne Westwood’s past and present fashion shows, guests can listen to the album at special music stations.

Catwalk Breakdown will be available from Selfridges, Vivienne Westwood stores nationwide exclusively for one week and through select music, and fashion retailers nationwide thereafter.
