For everyone who wondered what fashion retailers do exactly with the unwanted garments they collect in stores in exchange for a discount voucher toward a future purchase, say hello to Cheap Monday new, upcycled capsule collection, C/O Cheap Monday.
The unique 500-piece range of apparel is the result of the Swedish fashion label's recycling initative, launch earlier this year in store together with I:CO.
Each item from the C/O collection has been made from old, unwanted second hand garments, which were taken apart, redesigned and then sewn back together by Cheap Monday's design team at its Stockholm Studio. This means that each item in limited edition, unisex collection is also one of a kind and unique in its material, shape and fit. The upcycled collection is said to mark the brand's growing awareness of the issues created by the fashion industry affecting the planet, which includes the growing number of apparel dumped into landfills each week.
"We are ever conscious about the Earth’s dwindling resources and have been working for some time to become increasingly sustainable, actively looking at ways to close the loop and become a fully fledged member of the circular economy," said Nadia Kokni, global marketing director at Cheap Monday to the independent. "Our C/O Cheap Monday capsule is something we conceived to highlight the fact that upcycling and re-using materials is one of the most sustainable ways to ‘create’ and be part of the circular economy."
The collection sees Cheap Monday, owned by Swedish fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz, join the likes of its sister brands H&M, COS and & Stories, in becoming more sustainable and working to close the loop in fashion. It also marks the denim brand's first steps in becoming fully sustainable by Autumn/Winter 2018. C/O Cheap Monday Capsule collection is currently available for sale online and in selected Cheap Monday stores, with prices ranging from 60 pounds for a reclaimed 'tight' pair of jeans to 140 pounds for a reclaimed bomber jacket.
