US accessories and costume jewellery chain Claire's Stores Inc has reported a comparable store sales increase of 4 percent in the four weeks ended 27 May. Total sales for the period rose 8 percent to $102.5 million.
"Our international comparable store sales remained in positive territory, delivering growth in the low single digits," said co-chairman and co-chief executive Bonnie Schaefer. "Direct comparisons to last May are made somewhat difficult however due to shifts in six European holidays, one of which fell on a weekday this year versus Sunday last year when we are normally closed, and one of which will shift to June this year. Our plans for building international jewellery inventories are progressing well and customers are responding favourably to the increased offerings in this area."
Co-chairman Marla Schaefer added that "Claire's and Icing by Claire's each performed at or above plan during the month of May." Claire's Stores offer value costume jewellery and accessories for teens and young adults through its two concepts, Claire's and Icing by Claire's.
