Fashion instructions for Royal Ascot

It's the time of year again for pomp, circumstance, pageantry, fashion, glamour and most importantly horses - also known as Royal Ascot - the unique event in London's social calendar. Being the most famous racing meeting in the world, Ascot these days is still synonymous with style, its high profile visitors' outfits being publicised the world over. But, whilst it is steeped in tradition since its launch in 1711, the outfits aren't always a sign of splendour, and those who get it wrong risk the scrutiny of the fashion press, or worse, being asked to leave.
For women, instructions have been issued on skirt lengths (no more than two inches above the knee) and shoulder straps should be at least one inch. In the Royal Enclosure, Her Majesty’s Representative wishes to point out that only formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator will be acceptable. Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and mini skirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour.
For men, things are a little more straightforward, but just as important. Men should wear ties - not cravats - and keep their outfit simple. Hats should be grey - black hats are for funerals only. A traditional morning suit should be worn, consisting of a black morning tailcoat, grey waistcoat and grey and black pinstriped trousers. A bespoke Savile Row morning suit will cost upwards from £3000 but you should be able to find an off the peg suit from £700.
