Designer Kelsy Dominick of DiDomenico Designs has become the first American fashion designer to showcase her collection in Cuba since the embargo was put in place more than 50 years ago.

Dominick, who usuals showcases her eveningwear designs during New York Fashion Week, was approached by Cuban Trade representatives to present her collection in Cuba as a way to strengthen trade between the two countries through arts initiatives.

Commenting on the historic occasion, Dominick, said: "There are so many ways to break barriers between countries that are at conflict. Fashion is one of those ways. I am passionate about how design moves people and ultimately moves the world.

“The level of difficulty getting to Havana not only as an American, but as a company was well worth the response of the people that came after.”

The Washington-based designer showed her collection as part of Arte y Moda, the largest fashion event in Cuba's history, which marked its 20th anniversary in conjunction with Dominick's showcase held at the National Museum of Fine Arts in La Habana, Cuba.

Head director of Arte y Moda, Juan Carlos added: "Kelsy Dominick is not only the first American designer to show in Cuba since the embargo, but she is also the first to ever show in Arte y Moda's entire history. Given of our history with the US it is even possible she may be the first American ever, we are honoured to have her."

The American designer isn’t the first fashion name to showcase in Cuba this year, French fashion house Chanel presented its resort collection.
