The designer that will dress Michelle Obama for the inauguration into the White House next week will be watched and judged by millions around the globe.

In the current economic climate the First Lady will most likely choose an American designer - Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta spring to mind as possible contenders. Obama's style has to date been impeccable and America is more than due for a stylish First Lady to take up office.

As The times editor Lisa Armstrong wrote, whatever Obama chooses to wear "it will go down in history books and countless front pages and blogs. While the good news is that every major designer in the world would kill for the opportunity to dress her, the other side of the coin is that whatever she chooses somebody somewhere will massacre it, ridicule her or disclose it cost an absurd amount."

Commenting on what Michelle Obama should wear, Tibi designer Amy Smilovic says: "I think she should play up her own true style in the chicest way possible. Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin Klien are obvious choices. A long sheath with some amazing cut outs and fabulous jewellery, which should be faux. This would mix a young contemporary feel with true regal classic. For her to do a hi-lo mix would be the ultimate on current trend – fashion and economy wise."
