H&M last week won ‘Multi Market Retailer of the year’ at the prestigious World Retail Awards, which took place last night at the the annual World Retail Congress in Barcelona. Voted for by a grand jury of some of the world’s most respected retailers and senior industry experts, the Swedish fast fashion chain was celebrated for its practice in the development of international networks, including the strength of the brand in key territories, financial performance and strategic direction.

H&M’s phenomenal growth, unequivocal stance on ethical practices and innovative tie-ups with top designers - last week the company announced a collaboration with pioneering Japanese fashion brand Comme des Garcons, enabled the Swedish retailer to triumph over fierce competition and secure the highly sought title.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony Ian McGarrigle, director of the World Retail Awards, said: “In a highly challenging and competitive global marketplace, the pursuit of excellence across the entire spectrum of retail activity is not just desirable, it is a compelling business imperative. The World Retail Awards not only celebrate excellence, but as part of the World Retail Congress, we hope will encourage retailers worldwide to embrace ever higher standards in innovation, responsibility, management and operation.”

The World Retail Awards, organised by Emap Communications in association with Oracle, has become one of the most significant dates in the global retail calendar. They are designed to highlight and reward excellence across the key areas of retail skills and operations. The Multi Market Retailer of the Year award was sponsored by SAS.

The Retailer of the Year awards went to Tesco.
