It can be said that the top four fashion capitals of the world - New York, London, Paris and Milan - owe much of their reputation to the success of their bi-annual fashion weeks. Now that the Spring/Summer fashion week season has come to an end, wrapping up earlier this month in Paris, it is time to look back and reflect on some of the key trends which have emerged. According to data gathered by retail data company Edited, these are the main 8 trends to emerge from the ready-to-wear women’s wear Spring/Summer 2017 season.

1. Statement Sleeves

Where they be oversized or far too long, puffed up at the shoulders or ballooning at the wrists, ruffled up, flared out or fringed up - statement sleeves were in this season. Designers in all four fashion capitals looked back through history for sleeve inspiration, where it be the 1980s or the Renaissance era.

Statement sleeves were seen at catwalks shows from Tibi, Simone Rocha, Rodarte, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo and Loewe, showing you can’t go wrong with a bold sleeve.

2. Romantic dresses

Spurred on by Gucci’s return to all things retro and vintage, ultra-feminine dress, complete with lace and ruffles are back in style. Romantic, frivolous gowns with lace, ruffles and floral prints were key items this season. Ruffles, in particular were used to accentuate the wrist or décolletée. Other designers went for transparent, semi-sheer and floaty fabrics for their gowns, complete with velvet or lace overlays.

Romantic dresses were spotted on the runway at Fendi, Christian Dior, Valentino, Mulberry, Giambattista Valli, Rodarte and Preen.

3. Dressed up Denim

In spite of declining denim sales in Western Europe, decorated and dressed up denim remains a key catwalk trend. But for Spring/Summer 2017, denim was elevated to the next level. In addition to logged and embossed denim, denim pieces were spiced up with rich embroidery of animals for example. However, metal threading, sequins, and other applications were also seen on the catwalks as denim was anything but clean for SS17.

Dressed up denim was seen at shows from Peter Pilotto, Vivienne Tam and Philipp Plein.

4. The lace up sandal

In addition to the series of comfortable sandals and sneakers spotted on the runway (prepare for a return of the croc and Ugg next season!) the lace-up sandal, complete with block heel has been singled out as the item of footwear to invest in for next season. Key styles include lace-up sandals with a platform sole and metallic sandals with a gold or rose gold tint.

Seen at shows from Erdem, Dries van Noten and Blumarine.

5. The Parka

A sportive, technical, yet also functional jacket, this sportswear inspired item remains a wardrobe staple. For SS17, designers went for an oversized silhouette, outdoor-details such as pull cords and unusually vibrant colours such as mint green and coral red.

Spotted at Joseph, Dion Lee, Sportmax and Fenty x Puma.

6. The Mini Bag

Smaller handbags are rapidly becoming the new ‘it-bags’ - at least according to the leading fashion houses. The latest designs tend to feature a short strap, thin wrist strap and bangle-arm band as a handles. The small handbags tend to follow a simple colour motif, but are dressed up with decorative embroidery, fringes and key chains.

7. Gingham

Once associated with the perfect housewives dress of the 1950s and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, gingham is making a big comeback for SS17. The preppy motif was mainly spotted on dresses and skirts, although some designers gave the print a punk-inspired makeover, while others covered it with embroidery. Surprisingly, gingham was mostly seen in red rather than the usual cornflower blue.

Spotted at Creatures of Comfort, Prada, Peter Pilotto and Shrimps.

8.The Colour Red

Although the colour white played an important role once more, as did pale pink the newest trend colour for SS17 is red. On the catwalk this colour was spotted in a variety of shades as well as in head to toe looks.
