Istituto Marangoni Shanghai aligns graduate fashion show with future experiential retail trends

Istituto Marangoni Shanghai presented its 2026 graduate showcase, titled "VIA NOMADIS," on September 8 in Shanghai, transitioning from a standard runway format toward an immersive spatial and retail concept. Featuring collections from 10 graduating fashion designers alongside original media from fashion communication students, the event integrated digital projections, spatial architecture, and physical garments.

By framing student work within a broader narrative of physical and digital brand experience, the institution highlighted a strategic shift in fashion education toward multi-disciplinary competency and experiential commercial models.

Produced with technical and spatial support from digital firm Temple of Light, the showcase unfolded across three interconnected spaces designed to mirror evolving retail environments. The presentation combined a glass-lined runway passage with panoramic projection rooms that magnified garment textures, embellishments, and material details into virtual landscapes.

Operational backing from industry partners directly influenced the physical collections, with European fabric house Scabal supplying textiles and biotech materials developer SynMetabio providing innovative materials for select garments and accessories. Following the show, diplomatic representatives from Italy, Belgium, and France presented awards to graduates Liu Ziqi, Qin Ruiyang, and Zhang Han, recognizing design excellence, corporate integration, and cross-cultural craft application.

The structural redesign of the graduate showcase reflects broader recalibrations within fashion pedagogy as global retail shifts from transactional selling toward experiential storytelling. Rather than evaluating garment construction in isolation, the curriculum increasingly emphasizes conceptual development, spatial curation, and cross-media communication.
