A new exhibition featuring the works of acclaimed fashion designer Jean Muir has arrived in south west Scotland. A number of items never previously put on display will feature in the event at the National Museum of Costume in New Abbey near Dumfries. It follows an exhibition of the famous designer's work in Edinburgh which attracted more than 41,000 visitors to the National Museum of Scotland. The Dumfries and Galloway display saw its debut on Friday, April 3rd.

Jean Muir was part of the British design revolution of the 1960s making clothes for a number of celebrities. Many of her knitwear collections involved the use of exclusive Scottish yarns.

Muir died in 1995 but a large number of her garments were donated to National Museums Scotland in 2005 by her widower. Exhibition curator Kristina Stankovski said: "This exhibition is a fascinating insight into one of Britain's best-loved and respected fashion labels which we're sure will delight visitors from both home and abroad."

Jean Muir: A Fashion Icon celebrates the life and workings of this individual and revered dressmaker. Find out why she obtained such accolades through a stunning display of garments, sketches, patterns and accessories. The exhibition runs until the end of October 2009.
