This year it is the 210 th anniversary of the Scottish cashmere and wool company Johnstons of Elgin. Johnstons is celebrating its 210 years in business with several special events of which, opening a brand new visitor and retail development of £1.5m in Elin, Scotland on August 13 th . The anniversary continues with the launch of a tweed tailored collection, an interior range and a luxurious luggage line. The tweed designs are especially created for AW 07/08 and will be available at their own stores across the country and warehouses like Selfridges and Harrods.
The home ware is inspirited on the Scottish countryside. Using soft pale colours, eco fabrics and rich materials to create a homey feel with sophistication. These influences also return in their leather bags range called Scottish Estate, produced together with Kenyan luggage manufacturer Sandstorm. On August 6 th the nominees for the Scottish Fashion Awards 2007 were announced. The awards celebrate exceptional achievements in the fashion industry by Scottish companies and/or individuals.
Johnston's of Elgin was selected for the Textile/Cashmere Award together with Pringle of Scotland, for the Scottish Designer of the Year Award Christopher Kane, Deryck Walker and Jonathan Saunders were nominated, and Scott Ramsey Kyle and Louise Gray are the runners up for the New Talent Award. For the Fashion Icon Award there will be a public vote.
The panel of the second edition of the annual awards includes the Fashion Director of the Daily Telegraph Hilary Alexander; Kate Phelan, the Fashion Director of British Vogue; and Vivienne Westwood's head of Couture, Brigitte Stepputtis. On September 9 th , TV presenter Jenni Falconer will announce the winners at Scotland's Stirling Castle. The awards itself are designed and handcrafted by Scottish sculptor Andy Scott.
For London Fashion Week SS08, Johnstons will launch a knitwear collection in conjunction with young Scottish fashion designer Christopher Kane. A selection of the pieces will be on show during Christopher Kane's fashion show in London on September 17 th .
