The 2026 Macao Student Fashion Creativity Competitions are bringing together 54 young participants from 22 schools to compete across fashion design, visual merchandising technology, beauty and makeup technology, and fashion illustration.

Held under the theme “Green City”, the competition is designed to develop creative and cross-disciplinary skills while giving participants experience in applying ideas within a professional-style setting.

Fashion design contestant Vong Mei Nei said her interest in the discipline began with anime before developing through formal training. After participating in the competition for the first time last year, she returned with a stronger understanding of the process, including pattern drafting, garment construction and colour theory.

The practical focus extends beyond making garments. Participants are also asked to translate design concepts into customised proposals for clients, combining creative development with problem-solving and technical decision-making.

That emphasis reflects the increasingly broad skill set required across the fashion industry, where design development intersects with communication, production, commercial considerations and client needs.

The competition also provides a pathway towards international exposure. Victoria Alexa Kuan Chan, president of the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM), said Macao contestants have collectively achieved international results including one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, as well as 15 medallions for excellence.

The CPTTM has positioned local training and competitions as an important foundation for young people progressing to international events. Vong also pointed to opportunities beyond Macau, noting demand for bespoke tailoring and fashion design locally while recognising the global nature of the wider industry.

The 2026 competition runs through August 14, with awards presented across all four categories. Alongside recognising individual achievement, the event offers a snapshot of how vocational training and creative competitions are being used to develop technical confidence, industry awareness and emerging fashion talent.
