US department store Macy's celebrated its being in business for 150 years. In the 34th Street store in New York, chief executive officer Terry Lundgren cut a ribbon promising another 150 years, employees sang "Happy Birthday Macy's!" and showered confetti onto the customers. At night, the retailer threw a New York City Birthday Gala featuring a host of fashion celebrities. The neighbouring Empire State Building was lit red as part of the celebration.

Macy's also temporarily renamed 34th Street in New York City - the address of its Herald Square flagship and largest store - as RH Macy Way to honour its founder. The temporary signs will be on view until November 15th.

Macy's guestlist for the fashion industry gala gala included names such as Jessica Simpson, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Eva Mendes, Martha Stewart, Tommy Hilfiger, and Kenneth Cole.

The event culminated with the reveal of a special birthday cake designed by Duff from Ace of Cakes followed by a fireworks finale off the roof of the retailer's famous NYC landmark store.

"By turning 150, Macy's joins the ranks of a very exclusive club of iconic brands. The longevity of the Macy's brand, its place in American culture, and its legacy of serving customers for five generations are extraordinary" said Terry Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "It's amazing to consider that Macy's was doing business before many great brands like General Electric, Coca Cola, and Ford Motor Company were even born"

Started as a fancy dry goods store on 14th Street and Sixth Avenue, Macy's now has more than 800 stores across the US.
