The annual Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards took place last night in New York and Marc Jacobs scooped the coveted Womenswear Designer of the Year, while Thom Browne took home the Menswear Designer of the Year accolade. Both of which have won the honours before, Jacobs in 2010, and Browne in 2013.

Taking place at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, the annual celebration recognises “extraordinary design excellence” across womenswear, menswear, and accessories, as well as accomplishments in journalism, creative vision, and lifetime achievements.

Other winners included Mansur Gavriel designers Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel, they picked up the Accessories Designer of the Year award, while the International Award was presented to Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele.

In the emerging womenswear, menswear and accessory design categories sponsored by Swarovski, Brandon Maxwell won the womenswear honour, Orley designers Alex, Matthew, and Samantha Orley took home the menswear award, and Paul Andrews for accessories.

Beyoncé, Donna Karan and David Bowie win honorary accolades at CFDA Fashion Awards

There were also a number of honorary awards including Donna Karan being presented with the Founder’s Award, while Norma Kamali received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, and Imran Amed, editor-in-chief of The Business of Fashion won the Media Award.

In addition, the Board of Director’s Tribute was given to David Bowie, who died in January.

The surprise award on the night was Fashion Icon, normally announced in April along with the other nominees, this time it was kept secret, probably because the winner was Beyoncé. Previous winners of the award have included Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga, and Iman.

The event had a star-studded guest list, including Tilda Swinton, Lena Dunham, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Naomi Campbell, Karlie Kloss, Jessica Chastain, Ciara, and even Calvin Klein returned to the event for the first time in 14 years to support close friend Donna Karan.
