Value retailer Matalan revealed the average customer spend on its website is higher than comparable store spends per customer.

The figures released by the company, who's site launched only in November 2008, was an average of £28 per customer, as opposed to £20 in stores.

Matalan chief executive Alistair McGeorge said Matalan would add a "significant" amount of product online this year as the value fashion and homewares retailer seeks to broaden its customer base.

Matalan is expected to expand its stand alone stores from 203 to 300 stores from 2010. Like for like sales for the company were up 8.2 per cent in the 14 weeks to June 6.
