For next season, Mattijs van Bergen is presenting his debut Autumn Winter 2008/09 collection. It is his first ready-to-wear designs since his Central Saint Martins MA graduate collection in 2007.
This season Mattijs' unique handwriting come alive in a collection that has shown his maturity as a designer; his signature pleating is combined with contemporary graphic lines, focusing on novel shapes and constructions. Mattijs' jewellery has gone through a metamorphosis. The directional brass bow-belts have been remade into smaller leather versions; the beguiling bows applied to necklaces, brooches and sumptious rings. Delicate metal pleating returns to cuffs and new belt shapes.
Mattijs van Bergen was born and raised in the Eastern part of The Netherlands. His mother's skill and passion for textile materials made as much an impression on him as the virtuosity of his father's graphic designs. For Mattijs, designing is about finding a balance between the emotional and glamorous, craftsmanship and luxury. In 2006 Mattijs won the prestigious 'Modern Feminity' award in the Dutch Lancome Colour Design Awards. He graduated from the renowned ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, The Netherlands, the same school as Victor & Rolf, with whom he later completed his internship.
