After four Mexx stores closed down in the US last year, the UK consumer will see its Mexx stores leaving the high street too. Mexx is looking to focus solely on wholesale distribution. Due to this decision, one shop in Edinburgh and two shops in London will be closed down. For the 58 concession stores in department stores House of Fraser and John Lewis, the end is also in sight. The fifteen factory outlets in the UK will be spared, alongside the offices in Dublin, Ireland where Mexx is very active.

Together with the UK, Mexx covers 260 distribution clients and plans to further develop their wholesale presence over the coming years. Originally Mexx has a Dutch background, but was bought by American company Liz Claiborne in 2001. Last year, Liz Claiborne announced a total reorganisation to cut the costs and focus on stronger brands such as Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand Jeans, Kate Spade and also Mexx. Closing down their less profit making assets, fits Liz Claiborne's business plan.

Other brands they recently sold include Prana, C&C California and Perry Ellis. Two weeks ago Ellen Tracy was added to that list as well. Mexx is Liz Claiborne's biggest brand, which is active in 65 countries and is responsible forn an annual profit of $1,3 billion. Due to the closures in the UK, 300 people will lose their jobs. Liz Claiborne announced to round things up towards the end of July.
