After Trump was announced as President-Elect of the United States, many fashion companies had various reactions to it. Footwear brand New Balance made a positive statement about Trump coming into office, which in turn has led for a backlash for the Boston-based company.

While the company has opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership for quite sometime, it seems that it was LeBretton’s quote about the president-elect directly that set off the social media outrage. “The Obama administration turned a deaf ear to us and frankly, with President-elect Trump, we feel things are going to move in the right direction,” vice president of public affairs for the brand Matthew LeBretton said publicly in an interview earlier this week. After this comment came out, many turned to social media with backlash of boycotting the footwear brand or trashing their existing shoes.

The footwear manufacturer currently is based in Boston, with five operating factories. The company has approximately 3,535 employees according to its LinkedIn page. Whether or not this offset will actually affect New Balance as a business remains to be seen. If these comments are any indication, the company may receive a bit of a backlash in sales as a result.
