Originality and the Fashion Icon

We've all been there. Staring at the racks in high street shops and realising that if we are to purchase any of those items, we will probably end up looking like everyone else. And that, as we all know, is a big fashion no-no. And yet, it happens all the time.

Take the Ugg craze. Once upon a time, the Ugg was somewhat of an oddity. Only the likes of Kate Hudson could wear them in all seriousness and get away with it. Nowadays, women across the globe are wearing them. They are no longer special, but have joined the ranks of the uniform. The wearers are desperately trying to project an image of exclusivity and originality, but to little avail.

The same goes for the boho-chic looks sported by fashion icons Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. Worn by these two beauties, the looks are original and creative. However, as soon as we start emulating them, they loose those exact qualities. And let's face it, the only reason we suddenly want to be seen wearing cowboy boots under a mini-skirt is because we've eyed a picture of gorgeous Sienna cuddling up to her beau, Jude Law, in that exact outfit. It's almost as if adopting her look will lead to a magical transformation. Or, at the very least, people will think we're being terribly original. Alas, it does not work this way.

The question thus arises: how to adopt your own look? Go against the grain, but not against your own definitions of comfort. Scour the internet for inspiration. Sites like billcoo.co.uk, shopbop.com and net-a-porter.com are brilliant shopping addresses. Wear the creations of young and up-and-coming designers who have yet to make a name for themselves. This is a great way to adopt a look that is all your own without breaking the bank. And combine classic staples with crazy, retro accessories. Who knows, you may end up becoming your own fashion icon.
