British designer Sir Paul Smith was the recipient of the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade for 2009. The award recognises success in the export of British products that have demonstrated growth in overseas earnings.

The luxury mens and womenswear brand received the award which is made each year by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives of Government, industry and commerce, and the trade unions.

The accolade has the potential to greatly boost sales - some winners have reported increased turnover of up to 30% as The Queen's Award raises a company's profile and encourages more customers to choose their business.

Recipients of the award can use The Queen's Award emblem on advertising, marketing and packaging for the following five years.
