The Autumn/Winter 2009 Pepe Jeans London men’s collection contains a series of both retrospective and current influences wherein London remains the main point of reference. Throughout, Pepe Jeans revisits the branded prints and embroidered motifs that have for 35 years been  a recognisable symbol of quality, premium streetwear.

The ‘London’ range is utilitarian in style and heavily constructed with functional interior detailing. Engineered outerwear epitomises the military, urban street look. Trousers are slim and tailored and are part of an essential nightime aesthetic where imagery is dark and gothic. This theme transfers to graphic t-shirt styles where thunder and lightning imagery has been hand-illustrated in house and exclusive to Pepe Jeans. This part of the collection embodies the most innovative production techniques which have a young, experimental edge. The colour palette comprises of primary earth tones in khaki, navy, olive and black which perfectly represent its nightime setting.

The ‘Classic’ story incorporates the essential yet stylish garments that are a staple for the modern mans winter wardrobe. The classic trends look to the legend of Steve McQueen for inspiration taking the everyday robust clothing that formed his lifestyle and cemented his iconic status. Harrington jackets, chinos, sweatshirts and sea-faring striped tops recall some classic on-screen moments – from The Great Escape to The Sand Pebbles.

In a further acknowledgement of the brands heritage we see quintessential British clothing offered in this story; the essential classic trench and the duck down parka coat with faux fur trim hood which will effectively combat the elements. Layering plays an important role here where horizontal dark striped jerseys are made to be worn with corresponding navy jackets. Classic oxford shirting sits underneath two tone cardigans or over polo shirts and t-shirts adorned with the union flag referencing British Mod style. The corduroy trouser, a garment synonymous with timeless preppy style, is redeployed in this area alongside the durable chino. Colours range from deep reds through to neutral sand hues.

The colourful ‘Vintage’ line is influenced by sportswear garments from the 1930s and 1940s fused with the heritage of Pepe Jeans. The overall picture is a strong, very British retro aesthetic in a reflection of college days gone by. With hints of American styling we look to a favourite sporting team and the shirts and memorabilia we have collected over the years. The British obsession with longstanding sports is a prominent theme; pieces include long sleeved, preppy rugby shirts in bright optimistic stripes. Again layering is skilfully implemented whereby garments are multi functional; shirts become jackets, blazers become coats with optional built in sweaters and scarves.

The colour palette includes tones of ochre yellow, racing greens and dark shades which compliment the neutral tones of chinos and trousers.
