French fashion brand Petit Bateau is launching a collaborative collection with Japanese designer Kenta Matsushige inspired by kimonos and deconstructed sailor stripes next month.

The collaboration stems from the French label’s partnership with the Hyères Festival and as the 2014 winner of the Grand Prix du Jury Première Vision, Matsushige a graduate from Esmod in Osaka and the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, was tasked with reinventing the brand's iconic pieces.

Matsushige won over the Hyères Festival judging panel with his “timeless attention to detail” as well as his “coherent expression and sense of modernity”, and his minimalist approach to design is showcased in Petit Bateau’s latest designer collaboration.

The womenswear collection features three major pieces - a dress, a T-shirt and a sailor shirt and Matsushige drew inspiration from kimonos, which he then deconstructed sailor-stripes by adding a superimposed print to create a simple and sophisticated range.

The Petit Bateau x Kenta Matsushige collection will be available in a range of Petit Bateau stores worldwide and online from April.
