One of China's largest denim mills, Prosperity Textile, is set to begin weaving all its lightweight cotton denim fabrics entirely from Better Cotton, starting with Spring/Summer 2017.

"We believe sustainable cotton is what every denim mill should use and we value the importance Better Cotton has for both farmers and the industry in general," said Leo Ku, President of Prosperity Textile in a statement.

Better Cotton, as known as the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a non-profit organization which guides the global standards for Better Cotton and bringing together cotton's complex supply chain, from cotton farmers to fashion retailers. The Prosperity Textile maintains that there will be no price increase due to their shift to Better Cotton but will have the capacity to produce 2 million yards per month of lightweight denim.

"Prosperity Textile’s ambitious target is an example that we hope will inspire other textile mills to be a part of the initiative," added Paola Geremicca, BCI Director of Communications and Fundraising."Their support, and the support of our members, helps us to establish a more sustainable cotton sector."

The shift comes as more and more fashion companies, such as Levi Strauss & Co., G-Star Raw, Marks & Spencer and Inditex join the BCI and embrace sustainable cotton. "Prosperity Textile is committed to expanding its use of Better Cotton," concluded Andrew Olah, Chief Executive of Olah Inc, Prosperity's US sales office. "More and more of our customers are seeking fabrics made with sustainable cotton and Better Cotton is one excellent option."
