What do David Beckham and Britney Spears have in common? They have both managed to offend the Roman Catholic Church by wearing rosary beads as a fashion statement instead of as an act of true faith.

Beckham showed up at a party recently with four sets of rosary beads around his neck and was photographed for the cover of Vanity Fair wearing a Dolce & Gabbana version worth $1,000. Britney was caught wearing a white set while strolling around London. Consequently every fashion conscious teenager has started a scavenger hunt for the accessoire-du-moment and Christian shops have been barraged with requests for rosary beads. Much to the concern of the Church.

The Roman Catholic Church in England and Whales has published a leaflet stressing the importance of the rosary as a religious relic, but teenagers across the UK keep buying rosaries for fashion purposes. Christian shops reported an extraordinary rise in sales during the summer, and there are no signs of sales abating as yet. Considering their impact on teens, perhaps it is time for Becks and Britney to embrace the Catholic faith sincerely. Failing that, they might consider adopting a new trend.
