Twitter has begun rolling out changes to “simplify conversations” by easing the 140-character limit on replies, as now @usernames won’t count towards users Twitter characters.

The new updates make it easier to have group conversations, as when users reply, the names of the people they are replying to will be on top of the text of the actual tweet, rather than a part of it, which could be very handy for retailers and brands when engaging with consumers on the social media network.

The changes will also make it easier to see and control who is part of the conversation as users can tap on “replying to…” and it will show them who the tweet will be sent to, in addition, when reading the conversation, users will actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

In a blog post, Twitter’s product manger, Sasank Reddy said that the updates were based on “feedback from all of you as well as research and experimentation” and that tests of the new approach found that, “people engage more with conversations on Twitter”.

Reddy added: "Our work isn't finished - we’ll continue to think about how we can improve conversations and make Twitter easier to use."

The move follows last year’s update that allowed users to add photos, videos, quote tweets, polls and GIF animations without adding towards the character limit.
