Department store Selfridges is celebrating England’s winning weekend with an exclusive Umbro’s new England football strip. The football shirt is no longer only reserved for the playing field as Selfridges has been awarded stockist of England’s latest Tonal strip. Umbro’s Tonal strip will launch at Selfridges’ stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham on 1st April, after the first public airing of the official England kit on when John Terry led his fellow England players onto the Wembley pitch for a friendly against Slovakia. To avoid disappointment, Selfridges set up a pre-order line, allowing customers to pre-order England’s new Tonal football shirt £50 and jacket £100 ahead of Wednesday’s in store launch.
David Walker Smith, Selfridges’ Director of Menswear said: “Football and fashion have always gone hand in hand and the fact that the latest Tonal England strip is being launched in our store can only cement this fact. Regardless of England’s performance on the pitch we think this stylish strip will at least make the squad and fans look the part whatever the score.”
On 15th March 2009, it was Selfridges was 100th birthday. The business was founded by American entrepreneur Gordon Selfridge in 1909 and run by him until he retired in 1940 and took on the role of President. Gordon Selfridge died in 1947. Four years later the business was sold to Lewis’ of Liverpool for £3.4 million.
