Shoppers, press and the general public flocked to Shepherd's Bush this morning for the much anticipated opening of the Westfield Shopping Mall. The centre promises to set a new standard for shopping in the UK and Europe, and didn't disappoint customers who were treated to an official opening with London Mayor Boris Johnson, followed by a fashion show featuring model Erin O'Connor and a live performance by popstar Leona Lewis.

An architectually stunning showcase, the Westfield is home to a plethora of retailers from high end boutiques such as Louis Vuitton and Prada to high street favourites Cos and Zara. Over 280 luxury, premium and high street retailers from more than 15 countries are housed under its stunning glass roof, which further sees 14 brands make their UK debut and others creating stores that will set new standards in retail design.

Despite the credit crunch, the Westfield is expected to attract over 21 million visitors a year, some 60,000 per day.

The Mall is managed by the Westfield Group, an vertically integrated shopping centre group undertaking ownership, development, design, construction and marketing activities. I has investment interest in 119 shopping centres in four countries , with a total value in excess of £24 billion and is the largest retail property group in the by world.

One of the Westfield's much publicised highlights is its luxury precinct called The Village, which features prestigious retailers such as Dior, De Beers, Miu Miu Versace. Unfortunately, none of these stores had opened in time for the launch, with some, including Louis Vuitton, not scheduled to open until March 2009.
