What to wear for fall

The temperatures are at their highest and all you want to do is wear the lightest of light-weight cotton dresses to get you through another sweltering day at the office. However, fashion waits for no one and the must-haves for fall are already being written up. The basic, why-didn't-I-think-of-that look for fall is black. Basically, it's the opposite of what we're wearing now. Top a black outfit off with a smart, tailored coat, preferably with fur trim. The newest location for fur trim is on the hem line, like Burberry, or following the length of the sleeves like Derek Lam has done. Crafty fashionista's can stitch the fur onto existing items. Opulence is a big hit for fall, with plenty of brocade and historical references. Roberto Cavalli, the king of the showstoppers, does a great floor-length brocade gown in gold and black reminiscent of the Victorian age, but with a sexy twist.

Like it or not, we're seeing a great deal of leggings again. That painful reminder of the eighties is not only back, it appears to have taken over the catwalks. Worn under tunics - another must-have item - or dresses, they are a way of going bare-legged without baring all. Leggings look great on those blessed with great pins; however, since reality dictates another truth, a skinny pant worn in the same style is the way to go. The skinny-bulky silhouette also applies when reversed. The cocoon or egg shape that we caught a glimpse of this spring is a major look for fall. Think tulip-shaped skirts, dresses and boxy jackets. This look is decidedly sculpted and modern, but difficult to pull off. Always wear it with a high heel if you feel your legs aren't up to the challenge, and pair a bulky skirt with a fitted top to counter-balance the balloon effect. So go forth and shop!
