The musical chair dance continues on within the fashion industry, as founder of Italian fashion house Marni, Consuelo Castiglioni has stepped down from her role as creative director after more 20 years. But Marni will not be without a creative leader and has named Francesco Risso its new creative director, according to Business of Fashion.
Castiglioni departure comes after weeks of speculation. During Milan Fashion Week, rumours began to emerge that the fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection would be her last. Friday morning saw Marni confirm the impending exit of Castiglioni, who is said to be leaving her role due to personal reasons.

“These were hectic and exciting years which absorbed all of my energies to create a project I am proud of,” said Castiglioni in a statement. “Thanks also to the constant support of my family who allowed me to stay true to my idea, I built a brand with a precise and recognisable identity.”
She added that she felt the timing was right to stepped down and focus more on her personal life. “The time has now come to dedicate myself to my private life. I thank all the people who believed in this project and who, with loyal dedication, have helped me along this fantastic journey.”
Castiglioni first launched Marni in 1994, in Milan together her business partner and husband Gianni Castiglioni. Over the years the designers has garnered much praise for her elegant and sophisticated designs, earning a cult following around the world. However, her departure from her role as creative director comes as little surprise to some, following the fashion houses sale to Italian group Only The Brave in late 2012 to help speed up the brands expansion.
“The world pays tribute to the original vision of Consuelo, and to a unique brand which we are proud to have in our group. I wish her the very best,” said Renzo Rosso, president of Only The Brave in a statement. Her successor, Francesco Risso is set to take over the reins immediately.
The designer previously worked for Anna Molinari, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, and Malo, before joining the team at Prada in 2008. At the Italian luxury fashion house, Rise was tasked with working on women’s show collections as well as special brand projects. His first collection for Marni will be for Autumn/Winter 2017.
“I am happy to welcome Francesco, whose talent will contribute to writing a new chapter in the history of this house which is Italian at heart and global in spirit,” added Rosso. “I am confident that the creative team and the management of Marni, which have contributed to this success, will continue to make this brand reach exciting new goals.”
