New York-based designer Mara Hoffman is being recognized for her sustainable initiatives. The designer first implemented a strategy for ethical, effective change within her namesake ready-to-wear label in 2015. Because of this, recycled fibers company Repreve is honoring Hoffman with its Leading the Change Award during a NYFW event.

The Leading the Change Award is recognition is given through Repreve's second annual Champions of Sustainability Awards. The event has recognized a total of 68 companies across brand, retail and textile partners and is intended to inspire others to invest in sustainability.

With its award, Repreve "recognizes Mara Hoffman's longtime commitment to reducing environmental impact through conscious fashion," as stated by parent company Unifi, Inc. in a release. Hoffman's sustainable Initiatives over the past four years have included compostable packaging for e-commerce sales and incorporating recycled or responsibly sourced fabrics throughout the line.

The brand has been using Repreve's fibers in its swimwear since its Resort 2017 collection. These fabrics are made from recycled plastic bottles, resulting in a performance fiber whose product emits fewer greenhouse gases and uses less water and energy that alternatives.

"It's encouraging to know sustainable practices are being celebrated by our industry partners," Mara Hoffman said in a statement. "When we began our sustainable journey four years ago, we did so with the goal to generate awareness about the industry's impact on the planet and subsequently to design and manufacture our garments with greater care."
