Harrods managing director Michael Ward has agreed to extend his tenure and remain with the luxury department store until the beginning of next year.

Ward, who was due to retire from his position this summer, after serving 11 years at the luxury retailer, has agreed to stay on until the end of Harrods’ financial year, to assist in overseeing the key Christmas trading period.

He confirmed the news to staff following discussions with the retailer’s shareholders. This move also means that Harrods, who have yet to confirm whether Ward’s successor has been found, have more time to find the right replacement.

Ward joined Harrods in 2005, prior to that he was an executive at Apax Partners. The current Harrods boss is also chairman of Walpole, the luxury trade body that represents some of Britain’s best-known luxury brands including Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo and Mulberry.
