UK cycling and triathlon retailer Sigma Sports has appointed Oli Lawson as chief executive officer. Lawson announced the appointment on LinkedIn.
“I’m very proud to share that I’ve taken on the role of CEO at Sigma Sports,” Lawson wrote. He has been involved with the company for the past six years.
The appointment comes as the retailer prepares for a new website and what Lawson called “a marketplace transformation.”
“With a new website and a marketplace transformation on the horizon this is a new chapter for Sigma, and I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to take the company forward. We have some ambitious plans, so I can’t wait to get started!” Lawson said.
Sigma Sports was founded by Ian Whittingham and Jason Turner, who started it as a mail-order business from a spare bedroom in 1991. The following year they opened their first store in Surrey.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to be leading a business with such a rich heritage. What Ian and Jason started over 35 years ago has grown into something very special,” Lawson said.
The company has a flagship store in Hampton Wick, South West London, and a second store in Oakham, Rutland, as well as its online business.
In February 2021, Sigma Sports secured a minority investment from private equity firm Primary Capital Partners. At that time, Whittingham was the company’s chief executive.
